Personalized attention, support, unity, and solidarity, that’s
what you breathe among the members of the Manuelita
Sáenz Women’s Movement, a group that protects women
workers in the transport sector in Venezuela, whether in
the aquatic, maritime, naval, land and public transport
drivers and even collectors.
Promoted by the Minister of People’s Power for
Transportation, Ramón Velásquez Araguayán, this
Movement was born two years ago to respond to women
affected by various situations in the transport sector.
Its president, Eliana Salazar, is in charge of carrying out
this solidarity project that already has more than 3,500
women participating throughout the country.
“In the context of the hijacking of the Venezuelan airline
Emtrasur plane in Argentina, a group of women came to
me and raised the need to unite for the release of those
women who were trapped in the hijacked plane,” said
President Eliana Salazar, who is a defender of women’s
rights.
How did this
initiative begin?
We began to organize ourselves in street activities, we
went to the National Assembly, we went to the State
institutions and we were heard even by social movements
already organized in other areas and that is how the
release of those women was achieved, little by little. Since
we saw what we were capable of, we decided to continue.
There was another event that united us more and that
was the defense of the pilot Andrea Palacios, she was
the victim of aggression by those who disqualified
her professionalism and together we raised a protest
document and took it to the Supreme Court of Justice
where we managed to have her recognized and justice
was done.
Eliana What are the benefits
that movement brings
Salazar: to society?
Women transporters This Movement, which we named Manuela Sáenz,
the woman who was always with our Liberator, has 10
are protected in directions aimed at social, formative, entrepreneurship,
defense and sovereignty of the country, permanent
Venezuela mobilization, communication, training and the 7 vertices
of the Great Mission Venezuela Woman.
The ministry has 33 entities in the transport sector and
in each one there is a commission of the Manuelitas
extending the social work to all those women who day by
day go out to get the sustenance of their homes
